Locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars are the most important pieces of railway equipment you can have on your layout. Without them your train table would be just a table with buildings, mountains, trees, and other model train scenery.
There are many discount model trains and locomotives for sale today. Steam Era, diesel, and electric are all represented. There are a variety of wheel arrangements, road names, and model train scales available. The pages below highlight a sampling of some of the steam, diesel, and electric locomotives you may want to add to your collection.
The Steam Era is a hugely popular period among model railroads enthusiasts. There are many classic steam engines to choose from. "The General" American 4-4-0, Consolidation 2-8-0, Atlantic 4-4-2, and the GS2 Class 4-8-4 "Daylight Limited" are just a few examples of American steam locos. A few British and European steam locomotives that may interest you are: LNER 4-6-2 Class A3 'Flying Scotsman' (Great Britan), or the 240.P1 4-8-0 (France).
If you prefer to build a more modern model trains layout, then diesel might be just the ticket. A beautiful 1930's era diesel locomotive is the Burlington Zephyr. A few other diesels you might choose are: Alco RS-1, EMD F7 and EMD GP20, GP35, GP38 and others. There is also a wide array of European and British diesel locos too.
Electric Locomotives - The Crocodile Electric Locomotive (Germany) is very unique looking. It may fit right in on your train table if you're modelling a European railway. A popular American Electric Loco is the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1, introduced in 1934. And, if you prefer the ultra modern or futuristic look; the Japanese Shinkansen train, or the French Trains A Grande Vitesse (TGV), or other Bullet Train may be right up your alley.
